What is RFID tracking and how does it work?
RFID, short for Radio Frequency Identification, is an intelligent tracking solution that is mainly used in industries that rely on inventory tracking solutions in logistics and production. RFID readers communicate via antennas with tags attached to objects such as load carriers, cameras, cables or items of clothing. This makes it easy to identify these items, especially when it comes to tracking a large number of items. Items fitted with an RFID tag can be easily scanned with a reader without the need for a direct line of sight.
However, RFID offers many more possible applications, depending on the type of tag, the frequency and the reading range. The technology is extremely versatile and could be just the solution for your inventory management.
Areas of application for RFID tracking
- Inventory management: RFID tracking enables precise tracking of inventory, materials and products, resulting in efficient inventory management and control.
- Logistics and supply chain management: Our RFID tracking solution enables companies to track the location and status of goods and shipments in real time, resulting in improved supply chain processes and faster deliveries.
- Theft prevention: RFID tags can help reduce theft and losses by enabling companies to keep track of the whereabouts of goods and detect unauthorized movements.
- Access control and security: RFID can be used to manage access authorizations by allowing companies to control and monitor access to specific areas or resources.
- Product tracking and traceability: Companies can use the SIGMA RFID tracking solution to track the entire life cycle of their products, from production to sales and even to trace product recalls.
- Process optimization: RFID tracking contributes to the automation and optimization of business processes by enabling companies to streamline workflows and increase efficiency.
Active, passive and semi-passive RFID tracking
There are different types of RFID systems, including active, passive and semi-passive systems, each with different features and applications.
Active RFID tracking uses tags with built-in batteries that emit signals to be detected by readers. These tags have a greater range and can be tracked in real time. Active RFID tags are well suited for monitoring moving goods in real time, such as in logistics or transportation.
Passive RFID tracking, on the other hand, uses tags without their own power supply that draw their energy from the reader's radio signal. These tags have a shorter range and need to be closer to the reader in order to be detected. Passive RFID is often used for inventory management in warehouses or for anti-theft protection of products in retail stores.
Semi-passive RFID tracking lies between active and passive tracking. The tags have their own power supply to store data, but they do not send out constant signals. Instead, they are activated when they are in the vicinity of a reader. Semi-passive RFID is well suited to applications where longer battery life is required, such as industrial asset tracking.
